Pole dance is a performance art - transfixing, beautiful and incredibly challenging. It requires significant strength, flexibility and endurance. Although it was once predominantly associated with strip clubs, perceptions are changing and pole dance is gaining the well deserved recognition as an acrobatic dance form, sport and strength building workout.
When did you start pole dancing?
I started at pole-dancing in 2013, I’d been dancing for as long I could remember and I wanted to try something new. When I heard there was a new pole studio in my city I just had to try it! In September I'll have been pole-dancing for 3 years, I was hired as an instructor at House of Pole after only a year, so I’ve been an instructor for almost 2 years now. As you can see it didn’t take me so long before I got the strength, when you find something you love and have a flair for you often learn it pretty fast. Pole-dancing is definitely a hobby for me and I’m happy to be able to say that I earn money from doing something I love.
What other forms of dance have you tried?
I’ve tried so many different dance genres from ballet to hiphop but my favourite dance genre will always be modern dance! I still dance it - I love to combining modern dance and pole-dance, it can be SO graceful!
What do you love about pole-dancing?
Pole-dancing is a kind of therapy for me. If I have a bad day, there is nothing as better than a workout on the pole and floor. I love the strength it gives you, physically and mentally. I’m a lot happier since I started pole-dancing and I’ve lost 15 kilos (33 Ibs). You can see my progress and the difference it has made on my Instagram (if you have the patience to scroll down haha..).

What would you recommend to other women wanting to get into pole dancing?
I definitely think that other women (and men) should just jump into it! If they’re afraid of being judged for doing pole, I can tell them that pole-dancing has become a lot more popular and socially acceptable over the years. I actually get a lot of credit from older people, who have previously been the worst at judging pole-dance. I get comments like “Wow you are so awesome for doing this” and “I have so much respect for what you’re doing, and it looks so graceful” from people of all ages. Of course there will always be “that person” who sees pole as slutty, but with people like that, we just have to stop focusing on, because at the end at the day the most important thing is what YOU feel when you’re doing pole-dancing.
And for the men, a lot of parkour people have dragged pole into their sport, so just as graceful pole can look, it can also look cool and hardcore. PLUS there is no sport that can give you the core strength that pole can! Not that I’m saying that it is the hardest sport there is, but you use your muscles in a different way to almost every other sport - give it at try and you will see what I’m talking about!
