The New Year Resolution

Happy New Year!

This year we've made the decision to boycott the usual New Year's resolutions. There will be no lengthy lists of demoralising "New Year, New You" goals. Instead we have opted for just one resolution - To educate ourselves on our breasts.

2016 was a great year for #body-positivity and #self-love and we hope 2017 is the year more women than ever get professionally fitted... or learn to do it at home.

It is just one fairly straight-forward task that will make you feel better, look better and won't cost you a penny.

2017-new-year-resolution-bra-fitting-london-professional-lingerie-blogger-links-lingerie1

It is often cited that an incredible 80% of women wear the wrong sized bra and many more women put up with a bra that doesn’t suit their shape or style.

If you're in London, why not treat yourself to a trip to the Selfridges Body Studio or the legendary Rigby & Peller.

Rigby & Peller is a veteran in this arena, providing exemplary customer service since 1939. The stores are reported to mirror a luxury bridal boutique in their level of service, with their plush fitting rooms, satin robes and professional styling advice over a glass of prosecco. In the last few years, Rigby and Peller has also introduced made-to-measure technology into some of its stores. Its 3D mirror scans the upper body, recording over 140 measurements in less than a minute to determine a woman’s bra size.

If not, there is an array of great lingerie boutiques worldwide that offer professional fitting services. Or you can teach yourself to do it at home.

Lingerie as outerwear 2016

***

While underwear as outerwear is not a new phenomenon, 2016 has certainly been the year of revealing ruffles, silk slips and elegant exposure.

From luxurious loungewear to seductive suits and floor skimming sheer gowns, underpinnings have been utilised to elevate any ensemble.

For a unforgettable New Year's Eve outfit, we take inspiration from the most seductive stars...

Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon caused a social media backlash and misogynist stir at this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Oscar-winning actor wore a white, double-breasted, buttoned-up Max Mara suit with a visible black bra underneath. Many misogynists couldn't handle her 69-year old cleavage but we (and every sane person) thought she looked stunning in her seductive and sophisticated ensemble.

At the launch of her new lingerie line at Nordstrom this year, Ashley Graham wore a mid-length black pencil skirt and a sheer top over Adina Reay's Fran black balcony bra. STEP 10: Attach the final 2 lengths of 20cm to the centre front, using 2 jump rings, and secure to your side pieces - 15.5cm from the centre back.

christmas-diy-handmade-gold-body-chain-bra-homemade-with-instructions-christmas-gift-for-her-sensual-accessory-jewellery-12

STEP 11: The last thing you need to do is create the centre back closure. You need to attach one jump ring to each end of the chain and 1 lobster clasp to the side best suited to your needs. christmas-diy-handmade-gold-body-chain-bra-homemade-with-instructions-christmas-gift-for-her-sensual-accessory-jewellery-14

And congrats! you're finished.christmas-diy-handmade-gold-body-chain-bra-homemade-with-instructions-christmas-gift-for-her-sensual-accessory-jewellery-13

Our bra is based on a UK size 10, you can easily adjust your Body Chain Bra to fit by adding extra length (or taking away length) to the neck piece and the side pieces. We recommend you measure as you go. This isn't an exact science, you can simply hold the chain up to yourself and cut the lengths you feel fit best. lingerielafemme-nadiaking

Handmade gifts make the best Christmas presents and it is often easier than you think to create something truley bespoke and luxurious.

Chokers are this season's accessory du jour and our DIY bondage chokers make the ideal seductive stocking fillers for any lingerie aficionado.

This week we explore the easiest way to create your own at home...

The super easy way to make your own bondage choker..

You will need:

2 repurposed detachable suspender straps

2 16mm gold O rings

1 small strip of elastic (7mm wide)

Embroidery Scissors

Pins

Thread

Sewing Machine

STEP 1: Gather all your components. To make this neckpiece we repurposed 2 detachable suspenders from Adina Reay's Fran Short. The great thing about this choker is that it can be easily disassembled if you want to use the suspenders for their original purpose.

STEP 2: Secure the suspender straps together using the swan hook fastenings.

I'm not sure what came first - my love of photography, or my love of lingerie.

There is nothing I find more inspiring than a beautifully shot lingerie editorial or campaign. Over the years I have followed the work of countless fashion photographers and my consistent favourites are the photographers who know the difference between sensuality and ouvert sexualisation.

Hopeless Horrors

hopeless-halloween-top-lingerie-halloween-horror-films-lingerie-designer-australia-scary-movies-01.jpg

Aussie label Hopeless Lingerie is designed for late night horror movie marathons. Their contemporary collections are coveted worldwide by lingerie connoisseurs and we love their commitment to encouraging self-confidence and individuality.

As a brand that is synonymous with scary movies, their founder Gabrielle Adamidis is of course a B-grade horror movie buff. This week she shares her inspiration behind the label and her 5 favourite Halloween horrors films...

Hi Gabrielle, can you tell me a little about Hopeless Lingerie?

Hopeless Lingerie creates dark, modern and romantic lingerie, handmade in Melbourne, Australia since 2008. I run the brand with my sister Domi (who came up with the name Hopeless right in the beginning). I take care of the design, sewing, and production while she takes care of the business and management side of things. We also have Valerie our Production Manager, Diana in charge of Cutting (and lots of other things!) Eugenie, and Anita help with sewing, Em helps with posting, and Nick (my fiancé) helps with book-keeping.

What was the inspiration behind the brand?

I initially started Hopeless as I felt there was a niche in the industry for independent lingerie design, that was different to what you find in department stores. I’ve always loved art history and film, and wanted to combine that with my love of sewing and specifically lingerie.

hopeless-halloween-top-lingerie-halloween-horror-films-lingerie-designer-australia-scary-movies-022What was it about horror films that particularly inspired you?

I like mainly that its the complete opposite of what most people associate with fashion design in general. For lingerie its usually flowers and romance (and dressing up for a man - but I hate the idea that lingerie is for someone else. Its not - its for the person who wears it.) So I really just wanted to combine the things that I really love in a way that hadn’t been done before. I try not to replicate outfits - so often I look for inspiration in the colour palettes, buildings, and mis-en-scene. Its much more about a mood than costuming, and subtle references. When I was younger I was VERY scared of horror movies. In my early 20s I decided to face my fear so basically borrowed 5 horror movies a week from the video shop for months and forced myself through the history of scary movies. This was also while I was studying film and cinema at university so I really grew to love them once they were broken down and I could appreciate film technically too.

The Hopeless Horror Hit List

Name of Film: Carrie

Year: 1976

One of my favourite movie sub-genres are Stephen King adaptations, and Carrie is probably my favourite of those. Brian de Palma is also one of my favourite directors. Carrie is about an unpopular teenage girl who lives with her devoutly religious mother. She is teased at school and abused at home, and soon discovers that when provoked she has telekinetic powers. I love that she is both a hero and a villain. The Prom scene is one of my most iconic film moments.
I named one of our earliest styles after Carrie http://hopelesslingerie.com/search?type=product&q=carrie

Name of Film: A Nightmare on Elm Street

Year: 1984

One of the biggest horror classics, the first Nightmare on Elm Street by Wes Craven is an awesome film. Though it is quite dated and the effects aren’t super scary, its more the idea of nightmares crossing over into real life that I think is the scariest and best thing. And if you watch it by yourself late at night, I think there are still a few really good scares. The creative deaths at the hands of Freddy Krueger are one of the best things about these movies - the balance of being bloody but not too gory, but still pretty over the top.
The Nancy Cami is named after the heroine  http://hopelesslingerie.com/products/nancy-cami-basic

Name of Film: Suspiria

Year: 1977

I only semi-recently discovered Italian Horror/Giallo and I cannot believe what I had been missing. Dario Argento is one of the leaders of this genre, and Suspiria is perhaps his most well known. The story is about an American ballet dancer who transfers to a dance school in Germany. After a series of grisly murders and strange occurrences she discovers the school was founded by a witch and houses an evil witches coven. The colour and set design of this film is insane. It’s weird and rich and haunting and striking, it is very unique to this genre and one day I would love to build a set that is a homage to the house of Suspiria.
This bralette is named after Suzy the protagonist of this film http://hopelesslingerie.com/products/suzy-bralette-classic

Name of Film: Candyman

Year: 1992

A student researching urban myths comes across the story of Candyman. A foreboding man with a hook for a hand a mouth full of bees, that will appear to kill you if you repeat his name in the mirror. What I love about this movie is the crossover between real life and fantasy, and how Helen is drawn in to the myth she is researching. I think this one is particularly scary because of how it does walk the line between that reality and otherworldliness. And Candyman’s own backstory is particularly horrifying. I would recommend this one for the more seasoned horror movie watchers.

Name of Film: Silence of the Lambs

Year: 1991

A young FBI agent must trust a convicted serial killer in order to track down another gruesome criminal. I think the scariest films are non-supernatural ones - because you can (somewhat) imagine it happening in real life. My favourite part of this film is Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, he is absolutely chilling. This is one of those films where overall the colours/costumes/sets aren’t super striking, but they have these elements that are visually so powerful - the deaths head moth, Dr Lecter's mask, the skin suit…..

BRAS AND BREAST CANCER

bras-and-breast-cancer3pink.jpg

I recently watched a short film made by a young, small busted woman telling us wearing bras were bad for us - causing lymph problems and even breast cancer and it made me furious! As an older, fuller busted woman (32DD) this celebrity blogger is clearly not the person to preach to all women. She is however grabbing the younger audiences, promoting misinformation and the sort of behaviours that can years down the line cause issues, especially if you wear a c+ cup.

Breast Anatomy

The breasts are a mass of tissue and tubes but NO muscle. There are muscles above and under. Strong muscles in the shoulders, arms and upper back as well as the abdominals all serve to hold or hoist up the breasts. The breasts are kept firm by exercises and by wearing good quality bras. My personal favourites are Freya. With bras you really do get what you pay for. Just think about the one thing in your life you would NOT go cheap for and your bra should be up there!

Lymph Anatomy

In the sternum almost between the breasts lies the Thoracic duct which is the reservoir for lymph fluid. Our lymph system is the bodies waste disposal system and it is all over the body. When we get sick it helps to flush out toxins. When it is under pressure the lymph points like behind the ear lobes, at the throat, under the arm pits and at the groins can swell and become sore. This indicates that our bodies are fighting hard to keep us well. We can assist the lymph system by exercising and keeping our bodies fit and healthy. Using some of the exercises and massage techniques below:

breast-cancer-lymph-examination

Breast examinations are crucial and its up to you to do this. Its also a lovely time to get your favourite massage oil and perform this massage technique. I use warm organic avocado oil. It’s a bit more expensive but only the best for my breasts! I also only use this oil on my face and décolletage. First I take a warm cloth and place on the skin, I then follow the lymphatic self massage routine. I complete by placing a warm cloth back over the oiled skin. I finish off with a bracing cold cloth and allow to dry naturally. I am 58 and have very few lines, I NEVER use creams of any description.

Years ago I was told that because women use hairdryers and hold the arms above the head for a period of time this aids lymph drainage. As a yoga teacher I am inclined to agree. Below is a short practice that I advocate along with activities like swimming, running, stair climbing (not lifts or escalators) walking, gardening, cycling and anything else that gets you moving your body.

Instagram Yogi (top to bottom): ALEXIS FRANKLINMONIQUE GARCIA | JESSAMYN STANLEY | NUDE YOGA GIRLDANA FALSETTI | CYNEA GAMBLE | ASHLEY NICKI

It may be that if a woman chooses to never wear a bra from day one her body accepts that as the norm and adjusts to support the breasts but there are no muscles in the breasts so this would involve correct posture, strengthening the arm, abdominal, chest and back muscles.

In tribal cultures that don't use bras i.e. Kalahari, Amazonian societies these women generally have similar breast shapes and sizes to bra wearing societies however these women would have very active lives involving hard work, carrying weights, digging for food, grinding, climbing and walking great distances. Their postures appear much more upright unlike the more sedentary modern western one of slouching on chairs and stooping over desks. We are however getting fitter than ever!

It makes perfect sense for women with a small cup size to go without a bra if thats their preference, although I wouldn't encourage this for sports like running and riding. For the most part a huge percentage of women do wear bras generally because they need support. In fact in 2001 Playtex executive John Dixey agreed. ‘' We have no medical evidence that wearing a bra could prevent sagging, because the breast itself is not muscle so keeping it toned up is an impossibility. What it can do, particularly for larger-breasted women, is provide comfort and support.'' I don't believe that wearing bras is the cause of breast cancer or lymph issues. There can be so many contributing factors to this, genetic, dietary, environmental and lifestyle. Keeping a check on ones family medical history, as Angeline Jolie did and taking the appropriated action if necessary. Eating well, regularly exercising, using self massage and self examination techniques combined with rest and paying for well fitting bras should keep all issues at bay.

LA VIE EN LINGERIE: Fifi

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-02.jpg

Hi, tell me about yourself:

Hi, My name is Fifi. I live in Indonesia but travel to London so often it feels like a second home. I work in Infrastructure and Property full-time but also model and create content for brands part-time. It’s a hobby and passion of mine, I love creating videos and photo-shoots and sharing my experiences and travels with the world. It all started 3 years ago, I had a good following on social media and brands such as Dior and SK-II started to approach me about being an ambassador and creating content for them. I wouldn’t go as far as to label myself as a pro-blogger as this isn’t my full-time profession and I only work with brands I love and use so it feels more organic.

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-03

How would you describe your fashion style?

It can vary wildly depending on the occasion. To the office I always wear something tailored in neutral colours, such as a pencil skirt and vest, pant suit or skirt suit. When I’m not working I go for something basic and versatile such as jeans, and a white shirt or a knitted dress. I love brands such as Maje, Sandro and The Kooples, although I mostly shop online at Shopbop or Revolve Clothing.

On rare occasions I dress up as my alter ego, Viper Rose. She is sensual, confident and at times provocative without neglecting elegance and sophistication. She is another part of my modelling/content work as I often get hired to host events and guest star in fashion shows, often for club openings or Champagne/ liquor product launches. Viper Rose always wears something sexy and sophisticated, usually by Balmain or David Koma.

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-04

Would you say your lingerie fits into you that style or do you like to express yourself differently or experiment underneath?

Yes, my lingerie is just as versatile as my outerwear. I always embrace my sensuality through using the right lingerie for my personality and body type.

Daily, I wear more basic lingerie such as Calvin Klein or Cosabella. It's important to me to wear the right underwear for my outfit so when i'm wearing a tight dress I'll opt for a seamless g-string or with jeans i'll choose a hipster knicker so it doesn't show above the waistband.

On special occasions, such a date night or big event, I like to be more daring. I enjoy dressing up in more sensual lingerie with lace, beads and even feathers sometimes - I feel it enhances my femininity and sensuality. My special lingerie is a kept separate from my everyday lingerie. I have a separate wardrobe and set of drawers. I see my lingerie as collectors items and every piece has it's own special place.

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-05

What are your favourite fashion and lingerie designers/ brands?

My favourite luxury labels are La Perla, Coco De Mer, Atsuko Kudo and Bordelle. I have the iconic Bordelle girdle dress in my collection but I haven't worn it outside yet, I just don't know where to wear it!

I also love Agent Provocateur, Gooseberry Intimates and For Love and Lemons. I love their fabrics and the sensuality of their designs.

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-01

What’s your favourite set of lingerie and why?

I don't have favourite set because I collect lingerie and each set is special in it's own way. However, my biggest splurge has to be my embellished corset (see here) - it cost more than my wedding gown! It was custom made in San Francisco by Dark Garden who make costumes for Dita Von Teese, and the corset was ornamented in Swarovski crystals by Catherine D'Lish.

Do you have any favourite Indonesian lingerie or swimwear labels?

Unfortunately there are not many Indonesian labels but a lot of overseas brands do make their lingerie and swimwear here. Two brands made here that I like are Indah clothing and Saucha.

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-06

Do you have any favourite swimwear brands?

My favourite Swimwear label is Minimale Animale, because the cut of their suits is super sexy! I also love Indah, Agent Provocateur as the fit is great.

How would you describe your body image?

Right now I have a healthy body image, I maintain my body by eating healthy and exercising. But when I was younger it was very popular to be skinny - it wasn't desirable to have curves at all. I didn't like my figure and started crash dieting, which eventually led to bulimia. I had long journey to fight it but I love and accept my body now. When you travel you see different women of all shapes, sizes and skin colours, it makes you realise we're not all meant to look the same and you have to embrace your own kind of beauty. I've made two youtube videos on the subject on my youtube channel.

I love my body and Weight Loss Transformation, Story & Journey

What's your worst lingerie purchase?

My worst purchase was when I was younger and hated my body. Back then I was insecure having boobs because in the late 90's the trend was no boobs like Kate Moss and Shalom Harlow. I used to wear a minimiser bra or full coverage bra to hide them.

That was until the Victoria Secret and Lindsay Lohan era, when curves were back, and I finally embraced my shape and got rid of those ugly bras!

la-vie-en-lingerie-fitria-fifi-indonisian-model-swimwear-blogger-underwear-fashion-style-body-image-interview-07

Are there any words of wisdom you like to live your life by?

Embrace who you are and make the most of it.

Rethink Pink

rethink-pink-lingerie-swimwear-colour-01.jpg

Model | Harriet Taylor @ Milk Management

---

Pink has long been associated with innocence and femininity, evoking a feeling of sweet girlish playfulness.

However it is regularly associated with eroticism and seduction when combined with violet or black. For both these reasons pink is prevalent in the lingerie industry - from the candy-floss palaces of brands like Victoria's Secret, Fifi Chachnil and Chantal Thomass to Agent Provocateur's timeless pink and black packaging and baby-pink uniforms

rethink-pink-lingerie-swimwear-colour-02

According to style and colour consultant Angela Weyers: "[Pink projects] weakness and a lack of intellectual rigour." And after years of pink-washed products (overpriced pink razors anyone?), patronising marketing and gender stereotyping, this delightful warm hue certainly has some negative connotations.

It’s a colour that almost everyone has a love or hate relationship with.

rethink-pink-lingerie-swimwear-colour-03

Thankfully we're riding the fifth wave of feminism and there are plenty of women fighting to redefine the colour as subversive and grown up.

From feminist illustrator Ambivalently Yours to artists such as Arvida Bystrom, Scarlett Carlos Clarke, Juno Calypso, Carolina Mizrahi and Elizabeth Ilsley. There has even been a limited-edition art book called PINKD,  featuring 30 artists exploring “pink art in today’s society”.

THE ARTISTS

rethink-pink-lingerie-swimwear-colour-04

Pink is no longer shorthand for seductive or submissive and we're starting to notice more and more underpinnings in such shades without the heavy emphasis on sexuality.

Reclaim pink and embrace the colour that signifies happiness, self-love AND looks great on every skin tone.

DIY BIKINI BOTTOMS

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-01.jpg

How you make your own bikini bottom...

You will need:

Half a metre of swimwear fabric (Lycra/spandex)

Half a metre of lining fabric (Nylon tricot or Powernet mesh work well)

1-2 Meters of fold over elastic (we used 18mm wide FOE)

Rotary cutter (essential when working with stretchy and delicate fabrics!) and a cutting mat

Pins

Thread and Scissors

Spray Starch (optional)

Sewing machine (with a 3 point zigzag stitch)

Overlocker

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-02

Feel free to download the pattern HERE.

Our Pattern is available in a sizes 8 -16. We drafted the pattern using the Bikini Pantie Block on page 96 of Ann Haggar's Pattern Cutting for Lingerie, Beachwear and Leisurewear. If you have the book you can make the same bikini pattern to your own measurements.

STEP 1: Print out all 4 A4 pages of the PDF pattern. Assemble the pattern pieces together as shown below and tape together.

Screen Shot 2016-07-31 at 15.12.42

STEP 2: Cut out the FRONT and BACK pattern pieces in your size and tape the back pattern piece to the front to make ONE PATTERN PIECE.

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-03

STEP 3: Cut out ONE outer piece and ONE lining piece. Depending on your choice of material, you may find it curls in at the edges. To make sewing a lot easier, use a little spray starch and press to add stiffness to the fabric.

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-04(2)

STEP 4: Pin outer and lining pieces together (right sides together).

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-06STEP 5: Overlock the side seams. Make sure to leave the top edges open as they will be closed with the waistband elastic later.

Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-07

STEP 6: Turn your bikini bottom inside out so that the seams are secured inside the lining and press.Lingerie-la-femme-diy-bikini-bottoms-swimwear-sewing-project-bathing-suit-how-to-make-materials-08

STEP 7: Cut your waistband elastic: For a size 8 cut 2 widths of 78.5cm.

Size 10 cut 2 widths of 81cm | Size 12 cut 2 widths of 83.5cm.

STEP 8: Find the centre of your elastic by folding it in half and pinning. Pin the middle of the first piece of elastic to your Centre Front and the second piece of elastic to the centre back. Fold the elastic over the raw edges, making sure that the lining is incased, and pin in place. ***NOTE: when pinning, make sure to pull gently on the elastic (not the fabric) to add tension.**
