After a long summer sabbatical, Lingerie La Femme is back! And there's so much to catch up on in the world of lingerie and intimates...

--- NEWS ---

Today marks the 4 year anniversary of Lingerie La Femme! In 2014 I launched Lingerie La Femme as an online magazine dedicated to creating exclusive and unique content and promoting diversity, body positivity and luxurious intimates. My first and foremost goal was to utilise my skills as an ex-photographer to produce beautiful and diverse lingerie editorials - casting a diverse mix of models, using little or no photo-shop and shooting women in less passive, objectifying situations. After working predominately for Men's magazines for quite a few years I wanted to create beautiful, inclusive and positive lingerie imagery that celebrated the actual lingerie and the woman wearing it and not just her body.

My secondary motive was to explore the lingerie industry - to give myself a reason (and permission) to really dive into the world of lingerie and swimwear. Besides shooting a couple of lingerie brand campaigns and one trade editorial I knew very little about the lingerie industry and I had always wanted to know more. Being a workaholic, I couldn't just spend hours researching lingerie brands, reading articles and watching documentaries for fun... but - if it was for Lingerie La Femme - I could allow myself the luxury!

Lingerie La Femme has led to lots fun, opportunities and two eye-opening industry jobs. Finally this summer I decided to follow my passion and I left my job to study Fashion Contour. Now that I'm enrolled on a full-time degree, the content of lingerie la femme is going to change a little. There will be further focus on the creative and technical aspects of lingerie, more posts on lingerie making, uni projects, personal posts and non-exclusive editorials. To put it simply it will become more of a conventional blog and less of a magazine.... However it will still be a blog 100% devoted to promoting diversity, body positivity and luxurious intimates.

Modibodi | We've all heard of period proof underwear but Modibodi is the first brand I've heard to do period-proof swimwear.

Kendal + Kylie Lingerie for Topshop | Yes, Kendal + Kylie have launched a lingerie collection. Yes, they were uncharacteristically silent when it came to the launch... But what I find much more interesting is that fact that the capsule collection was co-designed by Jennifer Zuccarini - Fleur du Mal founder and creative director! Infusing her familiar aesthetic with fabrics such as mesh, lace and velvet, you can get a flavour of the Fleur Du Mal brand for a fraction of the price.

Les Girls Les Boys | Like many lingerie fanatics, I very eagerly awaited the launch of Les Girls Les Boys by Serena Rees, the co-founder of Agent Provocateur. I heard the term 'gender-fluid' and imagined all sorts of boundary pushing, innovative and tasteful creations. I am not entirely sure of what exactly I expected but it was definitely something a little less....boring. I find myself underwhelmed by the collection but still hopeful that something interesting and maybe revelational will come out of it...

ARABELLA LONDON

Arabella London captures the new swimwear space with stand out, form-fitting multi-functional pieces. Working beautifully on the beach and moving seamlessly into the evening, these are luxury wardrobe staples that challenge perceptions of swimwear and champion the perfect fit.

The initial capsule collection, AM by Arabella, uncovers swimwear designed to be worn far beyond the beach and with a focus on perfecting the bottom line. Arabella has reinvented swimwear – innovative design, close attention to detail and specific fabric choices have created pieces that bridge the gap between swimwear and ready-to-wear. The more relaxed styles have been designed to be worn as “swimtimates” layered under clothes, whilst the more sophisticated pieces can be worn right into the evening. Both beach chic and evening glamour are seamlessly blended and the collection is just at home on the world’s fashion stages as it is by the beach.

Arabella London has a fastidious care for construction – sculpted briefs define the waist, whilst the signature convex curve sits on the most flattering point on the body – complimenting your natural curves. Contoured bras have been uniquely crafted to provide both support and style whilst retaining elegance and structure. Secure gold clasps are integrated into the suits and adjustable straps guarantee a perfect fit and can be removed to immediately to offer a new silhouette and multiple styling options.

Commenting on the new collection, Arabella, 25, said; “This brand has been two years in the making, always with the premise that swimwear should be both chic and a great fit. Every piece is crafted to have a transitional and trans-seasonal appeal. The freedom and spontaneity that should encompass a holiday is brought to life in this collection – the pieces function equally well whether worn pool-side or styled under evening separates.”

COLLAR

‘Collar’ believes in the beauty of unconventionality and strives to dress the personality not a body type, encouraging women to love their skin, their being and the tiny imperfections fully and honestly.

In a time when the female body is hyper–sexualised, the label wishes to bring back the covert, concealed intimacy.

Merging high functionality with exceptional quality, ‘Collar’ maintains a mysterious and refined expression of beauty with a twist of edginess for a confident state of mind.

Holding a conscious and respectful outlook on the world and people around, label’s pieces are crafted locally in Latvia in limited quantities not to overproduce, as well as to retain their high design value. With an ethical, slow fashion thought in mind, the swimwear and lingerie pieces are made to last and bring a progressive change for the sake of a more harmonic co-existence between the inner and outer worlds of oneself.

SWIMSLOW

Swimslow is a sustainable swimwear brand. Designed in Iceland and made in Italy out of recycled quality fabrics. With focus on minimising environmental impact and the nowness in life, the philosophy behind Swimslow springs from the local culture and history of bathing in the Icelandic swimming pools. Simslow don’t believe in swimming seasons – swimming is a part of the daily life in Iceland and the designer took inspiration from her ritual trips to the local pool and the wooden sauna and mixed it with her experience to be in the now.

The weave in the swimsuits is from used materials such as rugs and fish nets. It’s made in Slovenia with an emphasis on the lowest possible impact on the environment. The material is then made in Northern Italy and is OEKO- TEX® certified. The swimsuits are then cut and sewn in the same region, just a few kilometres from the factory that makes the material.

Bra Wars

bra-wars-movie-poster-lingerie-documentary-amazon-prime-01.jpg

An exciting lingerie documentary has arrived on Amazon Prime!

Bra Wars documents Hollywood's affair with the bra. It's a light and entertaining film, featuring everything from 1920's breast suppressing bandeau bras and the bullet bras of the 50's to present day tech-enhanced creations.

The perfect weekend watch for any lingerie enthusiast!

ABOUT THE FILM:

Bra Wars discovers the exciting interactions between Hollywood's dream factory and the item of clothing.

The item of clothing, which mainly shapes the image of females today, is the bra. A bra is a phantasm, a promise of what is underneath. Hollywood's dream factory knew how to profit from this promise. They created individual lingerie for their movie goddesses and presented it publicly at its best. Divas became role models and the lingerie items became drafts for mass production.

Bra Wars features fashion designers like Jean Paul Gaultier, Chantal Thomass and Poupie Cadolle, actresses like Debi Mazar ("Batman Forever"), actors like Stephen Dorff ("Somewhere") and Michael Madsen ("Kill Bill"), models like Eva Padberg, pornstars like Cicciolina and Kitten Natividad, Authors and Film Historians like Camille Paglia and James Hosney and legendary directors like Russ Meyer.

The documentary is about the cross relation of lingerie, pop and movies and discusses lingerie, bras and sexy outfits as a symbol of female sexuality and how it is used, perceived and shown in the movies.

It is explored through both modern and traditional lenses and discussed as an empowering, dis-powering and controlling tool for both sexes. Examples from Louise Brooks, Jayne Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Madonna, Nicole Kidman and others are shown in interviews with film directors, actresses, artists and film historians.

NOTEWORTHY KNICKERS

noteworthy-knickers-diy-panty-pattern-Alexandra-Anissa-homemade-high-waisted-undergarments-012.jpg

Based in the California, Alexandra Anissa is an independent lingerie label handcrafting dreamy intimates to order from their cosy pink studio. Known for her provocative-yet-ultra-feminine aesthetic, each piece is handmade by the designer herself. From pattern grading, cutting, sewing and packaging - all orders are done with her immaculately-polished hands. Alexandrea Anissa believes lingerie is for everybody and every body, so all the her designs are available in sizes XXS - 5X (in UK sizes this ranges from about a 6-24).

Last week the label launched their very first lingerie pattern - the Valerie High Waist Panty. This classic and super cute design is ideal for the novice lingerie sewer and I couldn't wait to test it out.

The pattern was delivered by PDF and pretty easy to construct. If you are making multiple sizes I suggest tracing the pattern rather than cutting from the original, this will save A LOT of time as printing and assembly can be tedious and time-consuming. Directions are simple and easy to follow - from cutting to completion it should take no longer than a couple of hours.

If you're a fan of comfort and retro knickers, this is the perfect pattern to introduce you into the world of lingerie construction...

Book Review: Paris Undressed

Lingerie-la-femme-book-review-paris-undressed-the-secrets-of-french-lingerie-featured.jpg

*

ABOUT THE BOOK (the blurb)

French women seem inherently more confident in their bodies, able to embrace the sensuality of life and love. What's their secret? Lingerie. Yet, despite an insatiable curiosity for all things French, most women still find lingerie an enigma, a tangled melange of silk and lace, and are confused about how, when, and where to wear it. (Hint: it's not just for special occasions.) Many aspire to having a drawer full of silky, lacy undergarments, but have no idea where to start: How should my bra fit? How exactly do I wear a garter belt? Do bras and knickers always have to match?

With illustrations by French lingerie designer Paloma Casile, Paris Undressed: The Secrets of French Lingerie will help women feel at ease with their figures and show them how to integrate a lingerie lifestyle a la francaise to enhance their own femininity, confidence, and joie de vivre. It will transform the way women perceive their undergarments - and their bodies - and reveal how to co-ordinate a lingerie wardrobe to reflect personality and to meet lifestyle needs with the right dose of reverie. The book also includes a hand-selected guide to the most confidential addresses and lingerie boutiques in Paris, and discloses where to find the perfect bra, couture camisole or cheeky knicker.

Paris Undressed goes behind the seams, combining cultural references, expertise, and practical advice to inspire every woman to reconsider her underwear drawer.

OUR REVIEW:

I (try to) never judge a book by it’s cover, if I don’t like it I simply remove it - and that is exactly the first thing I did with this book! The scripted font, frilly border and illustrated lingerie-clad-woman-reclining-on-a-chaise-lounge made me cringe inside. I imagined another dubious ‘style bible’ with patronising and potentially misogynist views… but it is not everyday a new lingerie book hits the shelves. And I was far too curious.

Unlike what the cover suggests this is actually an intelligent, insightful and informative book - perfect for the uninitiated lingerie enthusiast or aspiring designer. For the lingerie enthusiast there are great chapters on lingerie heritage, sizing, brand guides and how to spot the most luxurious laces. For the aspiring designer there is invaluable information on lingerie fabrics, the anatomy of a bra and a even a Do-It-Yourself knicker pattern.

The only downfall is it's questionable self-help angle and infantile chapter on 'lingerie journaling'. I feel the book could have conveyed the importance of lingerie, self-love and body positivity easily without these elements.

My favourite Chapters are Three: Sensuality Not Sexuality, which discusses the differences in cultural advertising and distinctions between sensuality and sexualisation. And Six: Feel The Difference, which goes in to detail about the different fabrics used to make lingerie.

Intimate Experiments

lingerie-video-experiment-quotes-underwear-underpinnings-strapless-bras-youtube2.png

Do you ever dream of a world where you have a lingerie solution for every conceivable outfit and occasion?

Me too.

Unfortunately building the perfect lingerie wardrobe takes a lot of time, trial and error. There is no easy route or quick fix to underwear utopia.

Apparently there are seven different types of breasts and there are countless body shapes and size combinations. What may work for one woman may not work for you. There's no avoiding it - in order find the perfect underpinnings to suit your shape, size and lifestyle you need to be open to experimentation.

The results can vary - sometimes you find a life-enhancing bra or a game-changing ensemble but sometimes you end up with a yeast infection or a pair Spanx so tight they cause indigestion.

It's just an awkward, often embarrassing and sometimes liberating part of life's journey and there is nothing we love more than watching these very real, honest and funny experiments on Youtube.

Enjoy!

Happy International Women's Day!

Whatever you are doing to commemorate International Women's Day - be it marching in New York, networking in London or simply spending time with friends - let's celebrate sisterhood, pay tribute women who inspire us and recognise the countless achievements of women around the world.

The lingerie industry is filled with inspirational women and we have been fortunate to meet some of these fierce female entrepreneurs. Click below to meet 4 inspiring women who are redefining the lingerie industry...

--- JADA SEZER ---

Jada is a popular plus-size model with a huge global following. In 2015 we had the opportunity to shoot and interview Jada about her life, ambitions and love of lingerie. Since the interview Jada's career has continued to sky-rocket and she has also launched her own inclusive fashion label SEZER.

" I decided to create my own brand SEZER as a responsible brand, known as 'the armour you wear to take on the world'. Not only does it give everyone access to quality contemporary fashion but it ranges from sizes 8-24 with the main aim to merge mainstream and 'plus size'. We are all women. We all deserve to be great. "

--- NUBIAN SKIN ---

Founded in 2014, Nubian Skin launched a beautiful collection of nude lingerie for darker skin-tones. The brand aimed to empower and inspire women by filling a much-needed niche in the market, and alleviating the struggle women of colour face when trying to find natural skin-tone undergarments.

Since our interview with founder Ade Hassan, Nubian Skin has gone from strength to strength, securing major international stockists and launching additional collections, hosiery and curve sizes. The brand has received several industry nominations and awards including Ade Hassan winning the Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

--- BEIJA FLOR ---

Beija Flor is the brainchild of sisters Abbie and Mazie. Having grown up in the lingerie business (their parents ran Aura Lingerie, a lingerie supplier/manufacturer) they decided to  combine their unique insight and lingerie heritage to create a contemporary brand of stylish and comfortable intimates for the modern woman.

Beija Flor is underpinned by a genius and inclusive sizing system - X,Y,Z. Their bra sizes range from an A-G and, unlike many brands, Beija Flor pieces are developed so that no matter your size you can benefit from the same beautiful aesthetic without having to compromise on style.

Since the launch in 2016, the label has added a stunning swimwear selection, a lace range and ran a successful pop-up store. We can't wait to see what they do next...

Designer Profile: Six

Six-studio-modern-maternity-underwear-lingerie-for-pregnancy-mum-to-be-minimal-underpinnings-lingerie-la-femme-01.jpg

SIX

is a modern underwear brand for women who don’t want to compromise their style or self-identity through pregnancy and motherhood. The range balances the need for function and practicality with a considered contemporary aesthetic.

Designed and founded by Kate Anians, former La Perla, Coco De Mer and Myla designer. The brand infuses her 14 years of design and technical knowledge with her personal ethics and experiences of modern motherhood.

Designer-profile-SIX-STUDIO-1

Is there a story behind the name?

The name Six came from my own personal experience of pregnancy. When I reached six months into my pregnancy there was no hiding the fact that I was pregnant, and therefore needed to adapt my wardrobe to accommodate my growing baby and body. Six months is also a really crucial point in your pregnancy as you are coming to the end of your second trimester and entering the third trimester – the home stretch! Another important aspect in the name choice and the brand identity was that I really didn’t want the brand didn’t look like a maternity brand – it needed to be something simple and modern – Six was a perfect fit for this.

What inspired you to launch your own label of maternity lingerie?

When I was pregnant with my Son and encountered the maternity section in the lingerie department and saw what was on offer! I really wanted to buy something clean-lined, modern and made in beautiful fabric that was representative of the underwear that I wore pre pregnancy. There just wasn’t anything available and I knew I couldn’t be the only one out there with this problem. Starting my own brand isn’t something that I have ever envisaged doing. But when I saw the gap in the market for modern maternity underwear I was really inspired and driven to create something to fill this gap and offer a much needed alternative to what was available on the market.

Are there any celebrities you feel would be the perfect brand ambassador for Six Studio and why?

The women I would see as perfect brand ambassadors for Six would be strong inspiring women with a great sense of style and self identity who have all looked amazing through their pregnancies such as Pernille Teisbeak, Miroslava Duma, Natasha Goldenberg and Marion Cotillard.

Were there any hurdles when designing maternity lingerie as opposed to everyday lingerie?

There are lots of hurdles when designing lingerie in general, this is one of the things that I love about being a lingerie designer as the garments need to be functional as well as aesthetically desirable. The functionality and practicality needed for maternity lingerie is even more specific and added to that is the fact that a lot of women feel very self-conscious during pregnancy as their bodies change so much. I have addressed all of these issues to ensure that the Six bras are as supportive and comfortable as possible as well as being something that women want to wear and feel good in. All of the garments have the Brand label and care instructions printed directly onto the fabric to ensure there are no itchy labels against the skin, the bras all have 4 hook deep size adjusters to allow for fluctuation in your underband size during and after pregnancy.

I also really wanted to offer an alternative to the traditional drop down nursing cups so designed the Florence crop top style that has pull to the side cups for nursing which is really practical for night feeds.

What materials do you use and why?

Using premium fabrics for Six was a really important aspect of the brand for me. The products available on the maternity market generally use cheaper fabrics and are produced in Asia. No other brands were using good quality fabrics or producing in Europe. Comfort is key in maternity garments so using Italian jersey and French leavers lace ensures that the collection is soft to wear against the skin and comfortable as well as being functional and supportive.

Tell me about your jersey collection?

The jersey pieces are a collection of styles that are essential to your pregnancy and nursing wardrobe. They are designed to grow with you during your pregnancy in flattering lengths to cover your bump and have none of the typical ruching, gathering or wrap details often seen on  maternity wear. They are modern, refined and made in super soft Cotton Lyocel jersey. One of the jersey pieces is a tank dress with a discrete nursing panel and pull to the side cups inside the garment. I really missed being able to wear a dress when I was breastfeeding so designing a solution for this to be part of the collection was really important to me. One piece dressing is a must when you are too sleep deprived to make wise outfit decisions!! I really see this as an area that we will expand into as the brand grows.

What sizes do you carry? Can you explain how your sizing works?

All of the bras in the collection are sized Small Medium and Large. This is to accommodate the fluctuation in a woman's size during her pregnancy during each trimester.

I decided to take this approach to sizing from my own and other people’s experience of having to buy multiple bras in different sizes during their pregnancy due to their shape and size changing. Our bras are all sized generously in the cups using stretch fabrics to allow room for growth during the various stages of pregnancy. All of the bras with back fastenings have 4 hook size options to allow women to wear the bra on the loosest hook whilst pregnant and then gradually tighten the size after pregnancy as their body returns to its normal size. The first few weeks after pregnancy when your milk first comes in is the most drastic and uncomfortable change a woman will see in her size but this settles after a few weeks as feeding is established and then by around 6 weeks postpartum your size will have settled and reduced further.

NOTEWORTHY KNICKERS

Yes, I understand I may be stretching the term 'noteworthy' here. Certainly made for function over fashion, these curious knickers are more novelty than noteworthy.

While not incredibly well designed, the high waist with centre front pocket is undeniably useful. Whether you are travelling the world, attending a music festival or running a marathon, it's the perfect pocket to store your money/bank card/key/energy gels/emergency tampon... and depending on your outfit of choice you could even fit your phone!

Loose fitting outerwear and a sense of adventure is essential to make these work.
